Stonegrove Serenade – Music for the Community

EHRS is delighted to present Stonegrove Serenade, a series of concerts at EHRS. On every third Tuesday of the month, please join us for music featuring up and coming classical musicians.

Audiences and musicians alike have praised Stonegrove Serenade’s fantastic acoustics, intimate concert setting and warm welcome and attendees have been bowled over with the standard of talent the series has attracted. Café 118 has delighted customers with its fresh and tasty homemade food. Some of the comments we have received is that its ‘an oasis of calm’ and ‘it doesn’t matter if you’re on your own, there is always someone friendly to sit with’.
Stonegrove Serenade and Café 118 are run by volunteers with support from EHRS and Simply Scrumptious Catering. We pay our talented musicians – high calibre students and graduates of The Royal College of Music – providing work for them, as well as an opportunity for audiences to enjoy a very reasonably priced meal, concert and company. We are grateful for everyone’s donations on the door and some generous extra donations which enable us to continue to book musicians. All funds raised go into the provision of Stonegrove Serenade and Café 118 and not to other synagogue purposes.

Tuesday 18 April, 13:00
This month we welcome Joana Ly on violin, Martin André on piano, and Ekaterina Solomennik on cello.
Joana, Martin & Ekaterina are performing together for the first time for a special concert for Stonegrove Serenade. As our concert coincides with Yom Hashoah, the programme will feature music from Robert Kahn, an often overlooked amazing German Jewish composer that had to move to the UK during the war, Fanny & Felix Mendelssohn, composers that were banned by the Nazi party, as well as Kol Nidrei and the theme from Schindler’s List.

Portuguese violinist Joana Ly started playing violin aged 4 and soon joined the Aveiro Conservatoire of Music where she studied with Ana Sofia Mota until she finished school. As chamber music is one of her main passions, Joana was a member of the Sattler Quartet and now co-manages Artisti con Brio. Joana has been a member and guest in several orchestras including Garsington Opera, London Mozart Players, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Amsterdam, and more. She is grateful to have the support of the Harrison Frank Foundation, for the loan of a Maurizi violin.

After learning the violin and piano at the Yehudi Menuhin School, Martin André studied music at Cambridge University, and made his professional début conducting Aida for Welsh National Opera in 1982. This year Martin has just reached the landmark of 40 years of conducting operas and concerts in nearly 30 countries around the world. Martin is also the co-founder and co-director of the Islington Festival of Music and Art. Martin continues to enjoy his close association with Portugal, making frequent visits to the orchestras in Porto and Funchal, Madeira.

A winner of numerous national and international awards, Ekaterina Solomennik is a solo, ensemble and orchestra performer. She made her concerto debut in 2007 and since that time she has performed in numerous concert halls across Russia, UK and Europe. In 2019, she graduated from Royal College of Music where she did Artist Diploma program with Raphael Wallfisch. Ekaterina has performed at some of the Russia and Europe leading music and orchestra festivals, including such orchestras as YMSO and Ungdomssymfonikerne. Now Ekaterina enjoys an active freelance career as a solo, chamber and orchestral musician.

We invite you to enjoy a light lunch in our pop up cafe before the concert. ‘Cafe 118’ will be open 12:00. The café will re-open after the concert with drinks, cakes and a chat. Please note when booking if you will be using the café.

All are welcome. Admission is free, suggested donation £5.
