We will be discussing “Hitler, Stalin, Mum, and Dad” by Daniel Finkelstein.
From renowned political columnist Daniel Finkelstein comes a powerful memoir about his parents’ harrowing experiences during World War II. His mother, Mirjam Wiener, was the daughter of Alfred Wiener, an early critic of Hitler who fled to Amsterdam before his family was captured and sent to Bergen-Belsen. His father, Ludwik, grew up in Lwów and survived Siberian exile and forced labour after his family was torn apart by the Nazi-Soviet pact.
Hitler, Stalin, Mum and Dad is a deeply moving, personal and at times horrifying memoir about Finkelstein’s parents’ experiences at the hands of the two genocidal dictators of the twentieth century. It is a story of persecution; survival; and the consequences of totalitarianism told with the almost unimaginable bravery of two ordinary families shining through.
