The Pale of Settlement
Mondays, 30 January, 6, 13, 20, 27 February & 13 March, 19:30-20:45 on Zoom

The Pale of Settlement is a very important part of our Jewish history. The Pale was the biggest Jewish Ghetto in the history of humanity, which existed for 126 years, and made a profound impact on both Jewish and the world’s history at the time. Many Jewish families around the world trace their roots back to the Pale.

In the series of talks We will learn about the history and the lessons from of the Pale. Please feel free to join any of the sessions! With Rabbi Tanya.

In this session we will meet Pesach Avramson and Yoshke Berkovits. They were abducted as children (aged 12) from their homes in Motal, Belarus by a Chaper [child-snatcher] to become cantonists-solders in the Russian Army. We will learn about their daily jobs and why they had to do them. We will learn about the impact on Jewish community of Nikolas I policies and why Kahals had to be abolished. We will welcome the reign of Alexandra II who was a Reformer! We will see whether it brought some relief to our ancestors’ suffering in the Pale of Settlement at the time.
